Role of SF6 Relay in SF6 Circuit Breakers

Role of SF6 Relay

SF6 circuit breakers are critical high-voltage electrical devices in power systems, and their safe operation directly impacts the stability of the electrical grid. The change in SF6 gas density significantly affects the insulation and arc-extinguishing performance of the equipment. Therefore, the installation of a SF6 relay in SF6 circuit breakers is a key measure to ensure the safe operation of the equipment.

The SF6 relay is a pressure monitoring device with a temperature compensation function. It continuously collects the pressure and temperature parameters of the SF6 gas inside the circuit breaker and converts these parameters into an equivalent pressure value (i.e., density value) at a standard temperature of 20°C. This allows for an accurate reflection of the gas density changes. When the gas density falls below a set threshold, the relay automatically triggers an alarm signal or locks the breaker control circuit to prevent equipment failure due to gas leakage, thereby ensuring the safe operation of the equipment.

Working Principle of SF6 Relay

When the ambient temperature changes, the relay uses bimetallic strips and Bourdon tubes to dynamically compensate for temperature variations, ensuring that the pressure reading always corresponds to the standard density at 20°C. For example, the bimetallic strip deforms with temperature changes, compensating for the displacement of the Bourdon tube caused by thermal expansion and contraction, stabilizing the pointer to always point to the 20°C baseline value.

How to Use SF6 Relay?

When using the SF6 relay in an SF6 circuit breaker, the following points should be noted:

  • The SF6 relay must be compatible with the circuit breaker to ensure its proper function.

  • The installation of the SF6 relay should follow the circuit breaker's design requirements, and the specific installation location should be in an appropriate position on the gas density detection pipeline.

  • The SF6 relay should be regularly calibrated to ensure it functions properly.

  • If the SF6 relay triggers an alarm, the issue must be addressed promptly to ensure the safe operation of the equipment.

The SF6 relay is a very important part of the SF6 circuit breaker. Its role is to monitor the density changes of the colorless, odorless, and non-toxic SF6 gas in real time, ensuring the safe operation of the equipment. Therefore, for enterprises and organizations using SF6 circuit breakers, it is essential to recognize the importance of the SF6 relay, strengthen maintenance, and improve the safe operational level of the equipment.
